Before the week is up, Americans will most likely know who will be taking the reign as president of the United States in 2021. Throughout the campaign journey, celebrities have shown their support for their candidate of choice, whether via social media or by performing at rallies.
On Monday, Nov. 2, John Legend showed his support for the Democratic party nominees, former Vice President Joe Biden and vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris, with a performance in Philadelphia during a campaign event.
“Now, some people see the meanness, the bullying, the selfishness of Donald Trump and they mistake it for strength, a kind of twisted masculinity,” Legend said in footage captured and shared online. He continued, “Some see his greed and they mistake it for being good at business. Some of your former favorite rappers have been taken in by these lies.”
“I think they even founded a new supergroup. It’s called the Sunken Place,” referencing Jordan Peele’s horror film “Get Out.” “But Trump’s Platinum Plan for Black folks is nothing but fool’s gold because you can’t bank on a word he says.”
Legend’s comments seemingly were directed at several rappers, including Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, 50 Cent, and Kodak Black. As previously reported last month, Ice Cube and Lil Wayne both revealed that they met with Trump to discuss the Platinum Plan — a $500 billion initiative allegedly expected to better Black communities with more jobs, criminal justice reform and more.
When met with criticism and accused of meeting with the “dark side” by a fan on Twitter, Ice Cube responded to them, saying, “Every side is the Darkside for us here in America.” The West coast rapper continued, “They’re all the same until something changes for us. They all lie and they all cheat but we can’t afford not to negotiate with whoever is in power or our condition in the country will never change. Our justice is bipartisan.”
Ice Cube claimed that when he presented his “Contract With Black America” the Democratic party told him that they would discuss it after the elections while Trump made adjustments to their plan after meeting with him about CWBA.
Meanwhile, Wayne sparked outrage when he shared a photo of him and Trump on Twitter following a meeting at Trump National Doral Miami resort. “Just had a great meeting with @realdonaldtrump @potus besides what he’s done so far with criminal reform, the platinum plan is going to give the community real ownership,” the rapper tweeted. He added, “He listened to what we had to say today and assured he will and can get it done.”
Critics slammed the “Lollipop” rapper, calling him a “f—king idiot” and asking, “how dumb are you.” One person even declared that “Our brother is lost and confused.”
