JR Smith Is North Carolina A&T’s Academic Athlete Of The Year

JR Smith is still achieving milestones off the court.

As AfroTech previously reported, the former National Basketball Association (NBA) player embarked on his first semester at North Carolina A&T State University during the spring of 2021.

Smith was not only in his academic bag but he returned to his sports bag, too, becoming a walk-on for the Historically Black College and University’s golf team. His transition from the league to student-athlete was successful, to say the least, as he announced he finished his premier semester with a 4.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).

“I can’t even describe the feeling, I ain’t even gonna lie to you,” said Smith in a video reacting to the news about his grades. “A lot of hard work went into that s*** you know… Monday through Friday eight to eleven, sometimes longer, straight schoolwork. When you’re not used to going to school and doing all that s***, ahh man… freshman year you don’t think you can do it, you always hear about your disabilities,” Smith said in a Twitter video posted back in December.

What’s more, his hard work has not gone unnoticed as he has been named North Carolina A&T’s Academic Athlete of the Year.

“YESSIR @TheRealJRSmith !! Proud of you Kid!!! Love bro,” LeBron James wrote to Smith on Twitter.

Smith Issues Statement Following Feat

Smith took to Twitter to reflect on his journey following the feat, revealing his journey in college has not been easy. He also deals with dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but he is proving he can still do it all.

Victory Follows NIL Deal With LuluLemon

Smith’s latest win follows just one week after securing a name, image, and likeness (NIL) deal with Lululemon, AfroTech reported. Smith scored yet another achievement as the first male golfer to become an ambassador with the athletic apparel brand.
