Propel Center To Distribute $1M In Scholarships To HBCU Students Thanks To Support From Apple And Southern Company

The Propel Center will brighten the future of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students.

According to a press release, the HBCU technology and learning hub will partner with Apple and Southern Company to launch its Propel Student Impact Scholarship totaling $1 million in funding.

The scholarship program will be geared toward HBCU students pursuing careers in entrepreneurship, arts & entertainment, agri-tech, social justice, and health. Students will not only have a chance to receive $10,000 in scholarships but they will also work directly with Propel Center’s corporate partners for additional learning engagement opportunities. The move will advance the company’s effort to diversify the employment pipelines.

“We at Propel are committed to not only building the ultimate Black talent pipeline, but also to supporting and sustaining the ever-changing global and diverse workforce experience,” said Dr. Charles J. Gibbs, president of the Propel Center HBCU Consortium, according to a press release. “I am honored and humbled that through this first-of-its-kind scholarship program, and true to our mission, we’re also able to open broader career pathways for our so richly deserving HBCU students.”

Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, Lisa Jackson, also shared a statement:

“At Apple, we believe education is a powerful force for equity, and we’re thrilled to help create new opportunities for HBCU students to blaze trails in their academic and professional pursuits. All students should have access to pursue their life’s dreams, and this scholarship program will provide a strong foundation for the next generation as they lead us into a bold, innovative future.”

Applications are open to HBCU sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Interested students can create an online application sharing a self-created video or infographic of their career interests. Students are recommended to share their videos or infographic on social platforms and to tag Propel Center.

Applications will close on March 14, 2022, and the winner will be announced on March 23, 2022.
