Eric Scott Turner, the first and only Black person nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve in the upcoming administration, is scheduled to have his Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday to determine his fitness to be the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Turner, the former Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first presidency, comes into the confirmation amid much scrutiny of his qualifications to run HUD.

For instance, the former NFL player and former Texas State Representative is accused in an online petition against his nomination of having “a history of policy positions that betray the known truth that housing is the solution to homelessness.”

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren posted on X, formerly Twitter, that she has planned a list of 75 questions to ask Turner “to get to the bottom of his record and views.”

A damning ProPublica report about Turner after Trump nominated him revealed that he “as a Texas state legislator he voted against protections for poor tenants and has called government assistance ‘one of the most destructive things for the family.’”

In Turner’s prepared remarks that he’s expected to read before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs on Thursday, he calls the rise in national homelessness “a national embarrassment and something that cannot continue.”

If confirmed, Turner would succeed Adrianne Todman, the Deputy HUD Secretary who was named acting HUD Secretary when then-HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge, the former longtime Congresswoman from Ohio, unexpectedly resigned in March.

The HUD agency has had five Black secretaries — the most of any cabinet-level federal agency — including Ben Carson, who served in Trump’s first administration.

Turner’s confirmation hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET.

If you can’t be in front of a television to watch the confirmation hearing, you can log on to the internet and view it via a livestream provided by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.
