Key difference between Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer and his right-hand man he just re-hired revealed

Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer will have his entire entourage in Tuscaloosa during the 2025 season. Ryan Grubb has been hired back to the Crimson Tide after the team hired him last January but lost him before the 2024 A-Day spring game.

And with Grubb comes a bit of an ego that can be used to DeBoer’s advantage as he aims to coach up his players.

FOX Sports analyst Brock Huard believes Grubb can be the “bad cop” to DeBoer’s “good cop” with players.

“In some ways, (Grubb) can play the bad cop to Kalen Deboer’s good cop,” Huard said on The Next Round Live. “There’s a challenge between coaching 25-35-year-old men, because you coach them differently with guaranteed contracts, compared to 17-22 year old men.

“He can be gruff, he can be challenging, and he can have a conviction. There’s not a lot of bad cop in Kalen DeBoer…Ryan Grubb, he may have some of those same backgrounds and traveled some of those same paths, but he’s got an ego to him. He’s going to be on that practice field and he’s going to be speaking to those guys upfront like an old (offensive) line and strength coach does.”

The Seattle Seahawks fired Grubb as their offensive coordinator in early January. Even before he was officially dismissed, he was linked to a reunion with DeBoer.

Now that they’re officially together again, Grubb could be the Yin to DeBoer’s Yang. If Washington’s 2023 season is any indication, that’s where both belong.
