OpenAI CEO Says GPT-5 Is A ‘Major Upgrade’ That Will Give Users Access To A ‘Ph.D.-Level Expert’

OpenAI has released a more advanced language model powered by AI, GPT-5.
What To Expect From GPT-5
OpenAI announced its latest tech advancement, GPT-5, during a livestream Thursday, Aug. 7. According to Reuters, the advancement will be available to all 700 million of its ChatGPT users. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a press conference that GPT-5 is a “major upgrade” and promises it will be faster, smarter, and more intuitive.
The New York Times reports that GPT-5 leverages a large language model that can solve complex problems or tasks, otherwise known as a reasoning model. During the livestream, Altman said it will allow users to gain “access to an entire team of Ph. D.-level experts in your pocket.”
“For most people on ChatGPT, this is their first introduction to reasoning,” Nick Turley, the OpenAI vice president overseeing ChatGPT, explained, per The New York Times. “It just knows when to ‘think.’”
Furthermore, GPT-5 will show lesser instances of “hallucination” and will be “more useful” in writing, coding, and health care, notes CNBC. GPT-5, which went through 5,000 hours of testing, will also use “safe completions” for answers it would typically leave unanswered if deemed risky.
“GPT-5 has been trained to recognize when a task can’t be finished, avoid speculation and can explain limitations more clearly, which reduces unsupported claims compared to prior models,” Michelle Pokrass, a post-training lead at OpenAI, said, according to CNBC.
Moreover, GPT-5 can write “an entire computer program from scratch,” Altman said. In a demonstration, OpenAI created apps in minutes for an English speaker to learn French. Using two GPT-5 windows with a simple prompt, it generate two different apps, including activities such as quizzes and flash cards. However, regarding this feature, an OpenAI lead admitted the app has “some rough edges,” but users can adjust as needed.
At the start of the livestream, Altman also noted that he believes it will be an asset, especially to business owners and developers.
“We’re very excited to see what they will build with this new technology,” he mentioned.
