The Library, A Black-Owned Cannabis Dispensary In New Jersey, Opens With A Focus On Community And Education

A Black-owned cannabis dispensary rooted in community and education is open for business.

Charles Penn and Corey Dishmen founded The Library on Washington Street in New Jersey in 2021. Patch reports that the pair had a vision to launch a recreational dispensary in New Jersey.

Since then, the journey to launch has presented challenges, such as finding a building, establishing partnerships, and earning approval for local and state licensing. In 2022, the Library secured a microbusiness license from New Jersey, and the West Orange Town Council backed it in a letter, which Dishmen described to Patch as a “win for the underdog.”

The Library held its grand opening on Sept. 21.

“The obstacles and challenges were plentiful, but we managed to persevere through for our families and for this community,” Dishmen told Patch.

“The journey absolutely tested us, but it helped us grow closer to God, and our faith has increased exponentially over the past five years. All I can say now is that we are grateful to all those that have helped and supported us along the way — but we are ready to show New Jersey what we are made of,” he continued.

As for what customers can expect, Dishman told Patch that “education, quality, and community connection” will be The Library’s guiding pillars. According to the dispensary’s website, it offers a curated selection from premium flower to artisanal edibles. A staff member will also be on site to inform customers about its selections.
