Black Friday 2025 on Friday, Nov. 28, is an annual shopping event that takes place the day after Thanksgiving.

For many retailers, it is the biggest day for sales in the entire year.

Since the 1980s, shoppers have descended upon stores and malls in search of bargains for popular items or to get holiday shopping done. Some shopaholics go as far as to line up outside of retailers’ doors for hours before they open.

In the past, many retailers and big-box stores would open on Thanksgiving in anticipation of Black Friday. Now, most remain closed on Thanksgiving but still open early on Black Friday.

However, popular outdoor retailer REI is the outlier with its tradition of closing every Black Friday for its staff to have the opportunity to spend time outdoors.
