Dr. LeRoi Hicks To Become First Black Physician To Serve As EVP And CEO Of American College Of Physicians – AfroTech


Howard University alumnus LeRoi Hicks is breaking barriers.
Hicks is anchored by a medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, followed by a residency at Mount Auburn Hospital, where he served as chief resident, according to a press release. At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he completed a general medicine and faculty development fellowship, and later he earned a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Per his LinkedIn profile, he has served at ChristianaCare, a health system headquartered in Delaware, since 2014 in a range of roles, including but not limited to acute medicine service line lead (2016), chief medical officer of Wilmington Hospital (2020), campus executive director (2023), and now president (2025) of Wilmington Hospital.
Hicks is currently tasked with leading the hospital’s overall vision, financial health, and daily operations, according to the press release. Additionally, he is dedicated to health equity in his work.
Soon, Hicks will be stepping into a new title. He will become the next executive vice president and CEO of the American College of Physicians, succeeding Darilyn Moyer to become the first African-American physician to serve in the role.
“Serving ACP over the past decade has been one of the great honors of my career,” Moyer said, according to the news release. “I’m confident leaving ACP in Dr. Hicks’ capable hands. His aptitude for business leadership, commitment to health equity, and focus on patient-centered care will guide ACP into its next chapter of growth and innovation.”
Hicks commented, per the release:
“I am humbled to be selected to lead ACP at a time when internal medicine physicians are navigating profound challenges and unprecedented opportunities in a rapidly evolving health care environment. My experience in executive leadership, patient care, and academic medicine has prepared me to champion ACP’s mission and strategic imperatives. I look forward to working with ACP’s leadership and staff to deliver programs and services that support internal medicine physicians across every stage of their career and advance equitable access to high–quality care for all.”
Dr. Hicks will officially assume the role on July 6, 2026.
