Tristan Thompson Says He Invested $25K In Poppi — Here’s How Much He Made From The Bet – AfroTech

Tristan Thompson has revealed another investment move that paid off.

Thompson was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, according to a press release. He was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Spotrac notes that his rookie contract, which he signed at age 20, was a four-year deal worth $16.8 million. He re-signed with the team in 2015 on a five-year, $82 million contract.

On the “Club Shay Shay” podcast, he shared that he splurged on luxury cars and retired his mother, who worked as a school bus driver.

“So when I get drafted, I tell my mom she can retire because she was doing school bus driving and with my brother, who has epilepsy, it was hard. It was hard for her to manage both. So you know obviously retired but you know the monthly check she gets on a rookie deal is different than the monthly check she gets on the second deal … I called mom. I said ‘You know you get a pay raise,’” he explained.

He admitted he would have invested more of his earnings earlier if he had the knowledge.

“There’s definitely other opportunities I missed out on,” he said on the podcast. “When you’re 25, and you’re making $18 million a year, you’re not thinking about invest. You’re thinking about more like, ‘Let me buy a house’ … You’re not thinking about like alternative assets.”

Thompson didn’t remain naive for long. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the NBA player was an early investor in Anthropic. This decision stemmed from attending an NBA dinner with Silicon Valley figures while with the Golden State Warriors. He even brought his friends into the deal and walked away with “a bigger check.”

On the “Club Shay Shay” podcast, Thompson revealed that he also invested in Poppi, a prebiotic soda brand founded by married couple Allison and Stephen Ellsworth, which Pepsi acquired for $1.95 billion in 2025, per Yahoo Finance. He made a $25,000 seed investment in the company early on.

“Made seven figures, God is good,” Thompson said on “Club Shay Shay.”
