This University In Florida Will Integrate AI Into Their Curriculum Across All Departments By 2028 – AfroTech
More and more universities are adjusting their curriculum to keep up with AI.
AI in the Majors
Miami University is the latest institution to reshape its curriculum around emerging technologies. Beginning in Fall 2026, Miami University is rolling out a faculty-led curriculum initiative called AI in the Majors, according to a press release. The goal is for students to enter the workforce equipped with AI competency, as the technology is influencing every field.
“If it’s this embedded in the world, then it needs to be embedded in the learning and in the coursework,” Ellen Yezierski, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and lead facilitator of AI in the Majors, said in the announcement. “I trust our faculty to make great decisions on where it fits.”
The initiative will roll out in phases between now and 2028.
Departments Involved
In Fall 2026, 13 departments — which enroll 4,925 students — will participate in the initiative, including Accountancy; Anthropology; Art; Chemistry and Biochemistry; Educational Psychology; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Languages, Literatures, and Writing; Mathematics; Physics; Sport Leadership and Management; Speech Pathology and Audiology; Statistics; and Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry, per the release.
“Our department volunteered to participate in the first cohort because we were already studying AI and how it relates to our major, including both our undergraduate and graduate curriculum,” Donna Scarborough, professor and chair of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, said, according to the release.
By Spring and Fall 2027, another 15 departments, representing 10,949 students, will join the initiative. By the 2027–28 academic year, 21 departments will participate, impacting 18,982 students.
“Integrating AI literacy into our education at Miami is extremely important now more than ever. AI is continuing to develop at a rapid pace and becoming a fundamental part of nearly every industry. Learning how to use it properly will give Miami students an advantage when it comes time to enter the workforce,” said Nate Novak, a junior majoring in political science and business leadership, according to the announcement.
