Adobe CEO To Step Down Amid Investor Concerns About The Company’s Pace Of Innovation – AfroTech

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen is stepping down, and AI may be playing a role in his departure.

In a letter shared on Thursday, March 13, Narayen said that he has made the decision to transition out of the role after 15 years. He has served a total of 28 years at the company. Under his leadership, the company grew from fewer than 3,000 employees to more than 30,000, delivered tech into the hands of billions, and increased revenue from $1 billion to $25 billion, the letter stated.

Narayen will officially make the transition when a successor is appointed.

“I am so incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together,” he expressed in the letter.

Narayen’s departure comes at a time when the company’s revenue forecast just surpassed estimates, but did not resolve investor concerns about the company’s innovation in AI compared to competitors, reports Bloomberg.

The staffing change “adds questions around strategic continuity, capital allocation priorities, and pace of innovation,” Grace Harmon, an analyst at Emarketer, told Bloomberg. “Investors will likely focus on whether incoming leadership maintains a balance between disciplined execution and aggressive AI investment, especially as competition in creative and enterprise AI intensifies.”

Per the Wall Street Journal, the company’s shares fell by more than 6% Friday morning, following the announcement.

Nonetheless, Narayen remains hopeful for the company’s future, stating in Thursday’s letter that he sees great opportunity in AI and says the company is preparing for the road ahead.

“The next era of creativity is being written right now — shaped by AI, by new workflows, and by entirely new forms of expression. Adobe has never waited for the future to arrive. We’ve anticipated it. We’ve built it. And we’ve led it. What gives me the greatest confidence isn’t just our technology — it’s our people. Your ingenuity, resilience, and commitment to customers are what will define this moment,” Narayen said in the letter.

Frank Calderoni, lead independent director of Adobe’s board, will oversee the search for Narayen’s successor, according to Bloomberg.

“We are focused on selecting the right leader for this next exciting chapter of the company’s growth and are grateful for Shantanu’s continued leadership as CEO to ensure a smooth transition,” Calderoni said, per Bloomberg.

Narayen will continue to serve as board chairman to support the incoming CEO, notes the outlet.
