Chronic Stress – The Silent Epidemic

Stress is a silent killer—and Black women are among the most affected. We carry the emotional load of families, communities, and careers, all while navigating systemic racism, microaggressions, and health inequities. Chronic stress can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and burnout.
During Stress Awareness Month, AAWP urges Black women to prioritize their mental and emotional health. Whether it’s setting boundaries, seeking therapy, journaling, or simply saying “no” without guilt—self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. As physicians, we must model wellness not only for our patients, but for ourselves and each other.
Let this be the month you choose peace, rest, and restoration.
