Huston-Tillotson University has received a historic donation.

$150M Commitment From Moody Foundation

The private Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Austin, TX, announced exciting news during its fall opening convocation, which coincided with the university’s 150th anniversary.

According to CNN, a $150 million donation from the Moody Foundation will support student housing, academic spaces, and scholarships. CNN reports that the school has received a total of $1.3 million from the Moody Foundation over the last 57 years.

In 2023, the Moody Foundation announced in a news release a $1 billion commitment to support education in Texas over the next 20 years. In the release, Moody Foundation trustee and University of Texas at Austin graduate, Ross Moody, said, “Our goal is to fuel student success in areas of deepest impact and greatest need, while providing the opportunity for every Texan to access a high-quality education.”

“We believe the classroom is a launching point for positive change and hope this promise fuels a new generation who will continue to carry forward our vision of a bigger, brighter future for all Texans,” Moody continued.

Moody Foundation’s most recent donation marks the largest donation to an HBCU in history. The foundation has previously donated to the Moody Center, Moody College of Communication, the Blanton Museum, Southern Methodist University, Rice University, and Abilene Christian University.

“The gift — focused on students — will enable Huston-Tillotson to deliver on their strategic plan, bring to life their master plan, and transform the university, while impacting current and future generations of students as well as the city of Austin,” The University wrote in a press release.

University Board Chair Rev. Dr. Vanessa Monroe added:

“This significant gift by the Moody Foundation is a declaration of belief in who we are, what we stand for, and what we can become. It’s an inflection point in our history and a powerful statement about the value of Huston-Tillotson in shaping the future of students and their families for generations to come.”
