Mark Zuckerberg Bets Big On The Future Of AI With Meta ‘Superintelligence’ AI Team Taking The Stage

Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is taking a highly personal approach to what could become the company’s boldest artificial intelligence (AI) play yet.

Frustrated with Meta’s current progress in AI, Zuckerberg is forming a new elite unit internally dubbed a “superintelligence” team, Bloomberg reports. His goal is to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI) AI systems that can perform human-level tasks across domains.

In recent weeks, Zuckerberg has hosted top AI researchers and engineers at his California homes in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto, according to the outlet, pitching them directly on his vision.

Around 50 new hires will form a group that will closely operate under Zuckerberg’s supervision at Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park, CA. Insiders told Bloomberg that the Meta chief is personally selecting talent and serving as the primary point of contact during outreach.

A $10 Billion Investment And A Strategic Ally In Scale AI

Meta is reportedly building its superintelligence AI team alongside a planned $10 billion investment in Scale AI, a massive move that would mark the company’s largest external AI investment to date, AFROTECH™ previously reported.

Scale AI, which specializes in training data for large language models, has worked closely with tech giants such as Microsoft and OpenAI. The company’s CEO, Alexandr Wang, is expected to join Meta’s team once the deal closes.

The relationship between Meta and ScaleAI isn’t new, as Meta participated in Scale AI’s $1 billion Series F funding round. Now, by folding Scale’s infrastructure and expertise into its operations, Meta aims to accelerate the development of more robust and competitive AI models, especially after the underwhelming reception of its latest model, Llama 4.

Why Meta Is Racing To Catch Up

Llama 4 reportedly fell short of Zuckerberg’s internal performance expectations, sparking concerns from both leadership and developers, making the stakes high for Meta. Bloomberg reports that the release of a larger model, “Behemoth,” was delayed due to a lack of significant progress compared to earlier iterations.

These setbacks prompted Zuckerberg to enter what insiders call “founder mode,” reasserting control over Meta’s AI direction. He even created a WhatsApp group chat among top executives called “Recruiting Party” to actively discuss potential new team members, Bloomberg reports.

Some Meta employees are expected to transition into the new unit, although its structure relative to existing artificial intelligence divisions remains uncertain.

What’s clear is that Zuckerberg sees this moment as pivotal. Over private meals, he has told potential recruits that Meta has the financial muscle, thanks to its ad business, to invest tens of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure, including data centers. The CEO is betting that with a powerful superintelligence team and enough computing firepower, Meta can lead the global race toward AGI.
