Oldest Black newspaper, AFRO, earns national recognition

Baltimore, MD — October 2025 — The AFRO-American Newspapers, known today as AFRO News, has earned national recognition on two Feedspot rankings — the “45 Best Black News Websites of 2025” and the companion “45 Best Black News RSS Feeds of 2025.”

Founded in 1892 by John H. Murphy Sr., The AFRO is the oldest and longest continually published Black-owned newspaper in America still owned by the same family, and the oldest Black-owned business of any kind in the DMV. This latest recognition highlights The AFRO’s growing role as an award-winning, digitally driven media organization reaching new audiences through storytelling, technology, and innovation.

In recent years, The AFRO has expanded beyond traditional print journalism to include live digital programming, podcasts, newsletters and social storytelling that amplify Black voices and experiences. Its online platform, afro.com, continues to grow as a trusted source of credible news, cultural commentary, and community inspiration.

The AFRO-American Newspapers, the nation’s oldest continuously published Black-owned newspaper still owned by its founding family, has been named to Feedspot’s list of the “45 Best Black News Websites of 2025.” The recognition honors The AFRO’s legacy of trusted journalism and its continued innovation in digital media, storytelling, and community engagement.

Beyond the newsroom, The AFRO produces several signature events that bring its mission to life, including the elegant High Tea celebrations in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.; the Black Business Matters Expo, which uplifts entrepreneurship and innovation; the Unsung Heroes Luncheon, honoring everyday changemakers; the Salute to Veterans Luncheon; and the Juneteenth Celebration Breakfast, which celebrates freedom and resilience.

This recognition underscores what generations have known: The AFRO remains a trusted voice for truth, progress  and Black excellence—rooted in legacy and reimagined for tomorrow.
