Sacramento businesses to support during National Black Business Month


(FOX40.COM) — Every August marks National Black Business Month, a time to honor the role that Black-owned, minority-owned, and community-rooted businesses play in California’s economy and its future, according to the California African American Chamber of Commerce.

“At CAACC, we recognize and uplift the innovation, resilience, and leadership of entrepreneurs who drive change, create jobs, and strengthen our communities,” officials with CAACC said. “This month serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of economic equity and the need to continue building pathways for opportunity and growth.”

Home to a diverse community, Sacramento has a plethora of Black-owned businesses to visit for a meal, a new wardrobe, self-care and more.

Midtown Bakery

Located at 2301 J Street, Midtown Bakery offers a diverse selection of pastries, including cakes, pies and cookies. According to their website, the creator, Angela Harris, brought her love for baking to Midtown.

From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Mondays, Midtown Biscuits serves pre-orders placed online at midtown-biscuits.com.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, takeaway lunch items are available with limited desserts.

Midtown Bakery is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and is closed Tuesday through Thursday.

Classy Hippie Tea Co.

Open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Classy Hippie Tea Co., located at 3200 Broadway and owned by Leo Hickman, offers a variety of teas and treats to customers.

With reservation-required High Tea events every Saturday and Sunday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., customers can experience “the flavors of different cultures through a unique tea pairing ceremony,” the company said.

Nash and Proper

Founded in 2018,  Nashville-style fried chicken restaurant, Nash & Proper, has multiple locations throughout Northern California.

According to their website, the founder, Cecil Rhodes II, combined his love for fried chicken with the social media creativity of the co-founder, Jake Bombard.

The menu includes chicken, tenders, sandwiches, fries, mac and cheese and more.

The locations and hours include:

  • 1023 K Street in Sacramento: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Tuesday through Friday, 12 p.m. to 4 pm. on Saturday and closed Sunday and Monday

  • 2610 Arena Boulevard in Natomas, Suite #110: 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

  • 10357 Fairway Drive in Roseville: 11 a.m. to midnight from Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. 2 a.m. from Friday through Saturday

  • 8680 Sierra College Boulevard in Roseville, Suite #195: 11 a.m. to midnight from Monday through Sunday

  • 500 1st Street in Davis, Suite #13: 11 a.m. to midnight from Monday through Sunday

Underground Books

Underground Books, located on 2814 35th Street, was founded by Oak Park native Georgia “Mother Rose” West, under the direction of the non-profit organization St. Hope, to ensure that students and the community have access to books, its website said.

The 2003 opening came after the closing of the only library in Oak Park in the 1970s.

“Known as the ‘literary hub of Oak Park’, Underground Books provides programs and learning opportunities for the community and contributes toward ensuring all children have the same access to education and knowledge,” the website stated.

Local and national authors, lectures, poetry events, children’s activities and pop-ups by local black-owned vendors are hosted at the bookstore, along with much more.

Impound Comics

Impound Comics, located in Downtown Commons, Suite #115, features Sacramento’s first superhero, created by Brent Trayce Sands, according to Visit Sacramento’s website.

The store is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

Capital Agenda

Combined clothing store and barbershop, Capital Agenda can be found in Downtown Commons, Suite #140 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

According to its website, the business was established in 2013 and offers the highest quality of garments.

The business also provides haircuts in the same space.

The Loc Bar

Specializing in palm rolling, interlocking and crochet maintenance, The Loc Bar aims to make their clients glow, according to its website.

The business can be found on 1812 J Street, Suite 2, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
