Some Snapchat users will need to open their wallets to keep their Memories.

The app launched in 2011, but rolled out its Memories feature five years later. Memories allowed users to keep a permanent trail of unlimited photos and videos free of cost, until now.
In a blog post released on Friday, Sept. 26, Snapchat confirmed that users have logged over one trillion Memories, and the platform will soon introduce storage plans for those with more than 5GB of Memories.
“Memories on Snapchat are special because Snapchatters choose to save the moments that really matter. When we first launched Memories, we never expected it to grow to what it has become today. We want to make sure that our community can continue to store all of their Memories over the long term,” Snapchat said in the blog post.
The company said users over the storage limit can upgrade to 100GB and 250GB plans with Snapchat+, or a 5TB plan with Snapchat Platinum. At the time of this writing, it is unclear how much the storage plans will cost.
Nonetheless, Snapchat will temporarily ensure that users with more than 5GB of storage have access to their Memories for the next 12 months. Users will be able to upgrade to a storage plan at any time.
“It’s never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost,” Snapchat explained in the blog post.
“Thank you for trusting us with some of your most precious moments. These changes will allow us to continue to invest in making Memories better for our entire community,” the post continued.
How To Download Memories For Free
Users who want to avoid paying for extra storage can download their Memories by swiping up from the camera screen. From there, you will be directed to Memories. Users will need to click and hold on the image they want to download, and a tab will open. Click Export Photo and then download.
