Steelers Super Bowl Champion Mike Collier Passes Away At 71

Pittsburgh Steelers’ 1975 Super Bowl champ Mike Collier has passed away at the age of 71. His death was confirmed on Feb. 16, though no official cause has been disclosed. Collier is remembered for his pivotal role in the Steelers’ second consecutive Super Bowl win, cementing his place in franchise history, The Daily Mail reported.

Collier’s NFL career began with the Steelers in 1975 after being selected in the 14th round of the draft. Though his time in Pittsburgh was short, he left his mark. He is most remembered for his plays during Super Bowl X in 1976 against the Dallas Cowboys, where he played a crucial role in the fourth quarter. With the Steelers behind by a point, Collier returned a 25-yard free kick, setting up a field goal that put Pittsburgh ahead, leading to their 21-17 victory, The New York Post reported.

Before joining the Steelers, Collier played college football at Morgan State University in Baltimore, where he was known for his kick return skills. He went on to earn a spot with the Steelers, where he became a fan favorite. During his lone season with Pittsburgh, Collier scored three touchdowns, including one in his debut game against the San Diego Chargers, a 37-0 rout.

After a season cut short by injury in 1976, Collier went on to play three more seasons with the Buffalo Bills. However, his impact on the Steelers was lasting. He was a member of the team during a period of dominance in the NFL, contributing to one of the franchise’s most iconic Super Bowl victories.

Following his retirement from football, Collier returned to his home state of Maryland, where he managed a Martin’s grocery store and coached local sports teams, including football, basketball, and baseball. He remained involved with the Steelers, regularly attending autograph signings and engaging with fans.

Collier is survived by his wife, Lisa, three children, and six grandchildren.

He once reflected on his NFL career, saying, “I realize that a lot of people would love to have been in my position. I thank God that He gave me the opportunity to be there.”
