Tennessee State University To Build $50M Engineering Facility For Students To Have What They Need To Compete Globally

Tennessee State University (TSU) wants to produce more engineers.

According to a news release, the HBCU was approved to build a $50 million engineering facility supporting innovation and research. The Tennessee State Building Commission green-lighted the project on Aug. 15.

“This building represents an opportunity for innovation and leadership,” said TSU President Dwayne Tucker in a news release.

“Tennessee State University is preparing the next generation of engineers who will shape our state and our nation. This investment ensures that our students have access to the tools, spaces, and experiences necessary to compete globally,” President Tucker continued.

Project plans include classrooms, computer labs, and over 30 teaching and research laboratories, including a Future Energy Lab, Additive Manufacturing Lab, and Drone Flight and Air Traffic Lab. Additionally, it will merge the engineering programs and the Applied & Industrial Technology program into “one modern, interdisciplinary complex designed to foster collaboration across all academic levels,” notes the news release.

“The new building is a substantial investment in the College of Engineering,” explained Dr. Lin Li, dean of the college of engineering, according to the news release.

“Over the years, our college has experienced significant growth in students, faculty, research, and academic programs. This facility will provide a world-class space that enhances interdisciplinary collaboration across six undergraduate programs, three master’s programs, and one Ph.D. program. It will also host innovative engineering activities that directly benefit the metro Nashville area and Middle Tennessee,” Dr. Li continued.

Will Radford, assistant vice president of planning, design, and construction, also said the engineering facility is a step in the right direction for the university and will position the engineering program to meet industry and statewide demands.

“By establishing new partnerships and providing modern facilities, we are positioning TSU engineering students to not only keep pace but to set standards in the industry,” Radford explained in the news release.

The engineering facility is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
