Texans’ DeMeco Ryans hints at team concerns surrounding release of CJ Gardner-Johnson

The Houston Texans‘ decision to release CJ Gardner-Johnson came as a surprise. Many want to know the real story behind it, but Texans coach DeMeco Ryans isn’t spilling those details.

On Wednesday, Ryans declined to discuss specific reasons behind the release but made it clear that it was his decision and was rooted in doing what’s best for the team.

ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime reported Ryans didn’t want to dive into the details of the release, stating the decision was based on what was best for the team. Bien-Aime also noted Ryans confirmed the Texans did not seek a trade partner for Gardner-Johnson.

Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander tweeted that Ryans didn’t believe the move came as a surprise to the players. Ryans talked about “knowing the pulse of the team” and the “need and importance of protecting the team” as key factors shaping the decision.

“I know what everybody stands for and I know what everyone is about,” Ryans said. “I’ll make the right decision for my players.”

The Texans, 0-3 entering Week 4, are moving forward with a revamped secondary that now features Calen Bullock and M.J. Stewart as starters.
