Travis Scott’s Foundation Launches Program With Space Center Houston To Empower Students In Engineering, Design, And Exploration

Travis Scott is supporting students in STEM.
As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the rapper launched the Cactus Jack Foundation in November 2020, and its pillars center on education and creativity. One of its earliest initiatives included a scholarship for HBCU students to pay their tuition fees, and it was named in honor of Scott’s grandfather, the late Dr. Waymon Webster, a Prairie View A&M University (Texas) graduate and dean, according to Variety.
“Waymon Webster was a dean of the Prairie View A&M graduate school,” Scott said at the time, per Variety. “My grandfather wanted me to take it all the way through college. I feel there is a power in education so to be able to give someone the opportunity to fulfill that dream as my papa thought for me is amazing.”
Partnership With Space Center Houston
One year after the foundation’s inception, it launched the 60,000-square-foot Cact.us Design Center at TXRX Labs, which caters to at-risk middle and high school students. The center will now be home to students in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) in light of a new partnership with Space Center Houston that will support a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum, Complex reports.
The Cact.us Design Center at TXRX Labs will feature virtual and in-person workshops and invite students to find solutions in water scarcity, space habitation, and power generation, among other real-world problems. What’s more, students will have a chance to work directly with engineers at NASA and be grouped in teams targeting design sketching, modeling, systems thinking, and fabrication.
The partnership aims to increase career exposure in engineering, design, and exploration.
“Opportunities like this are being offered to help enrich our students’ lives and inspire them to pursue careers in fields where they cannot only thrive but also bring back solutions to their communities,” Scott said, according to Complex.
At the conclusion of the program, students will be able to present during an event hosted by Scott and industry professionals on Dec. 19.
