Amid the revelry, pomp and circumstance at the Republican National Convention‘s (RNC) opening night on Monday in Milwaukee, Donald Trump made his first public appearance since being shot in the ear during a failed assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

And while convention-goers gave him a hero’s welcome and all of the attention was on him, it may not have been enough to keep Trump awake, if photos and video footage are any indication.

It appeared that Trump may have fallen asleep while seated in the VIP’s box at the RNC.

According to critics on social media, Trump definitely snoozed a bit despite the loud buzz in the arena that included a parade of speakers, heavy applause and musical performances.

There was irony in the viral footage of Trump’s eyes appearing to be closed for an extended period of time following brief moments of what looked like him nodding off. After all, Trump, 77, has frequently accused President Joe Biden, 81, of having low energy because of his age.

But on Monday night, just two days removed from being shot at in an incident that could make anyone emotionally exhausted, it was Trump who had the low energy.

Perhaps he was sedated from any pain medication doctors administered or prescribed.

But either way, social media’s judgment was clear: Trump was guilty of falling asleep at the RNC.

The scene Monday night was reminiscent of the reports that came out of Manhattan Criminal Court during Trump’s hush money trial in which he was convicted of 34 felony counts for paying off porn star Stormy Daniels via illegal means for political purposes.

Back then, nearly three months ago, a reporter in the courtroom observed Trump falling asleep during testimony.

Frank G. Runyeon, who covered the trial for the legal analysis website Law360, detailed the septuagenarian’s slumber in steps in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“Trump’s head slowly dropped, his eyes closed. It jerked back upward,” Runyeon wrote. “He adjusts himself. Then, his head droops again. He straightens up, leaning back. His head [droops] for a third time, he shakes his shoulders. Eyes closed still. His head drops. Finally, he pops his eyes open.” Other reporters present in the courtroom also noticed Trump’s nodding off, which some noted lasted a minute or more.

Even New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who enjoys a close relationship with Trump, noted the sleepiness in court.

Trump himself has bragged that he doesn’t need a lot of sleep in the past.

That may not be true anymore, if Monday night was any indication.
