Veterinarian Ashton Sellers Becomes The First Black Woman And Youngest Woman To Own An Animal Hospital In Kansas City – AfroTech

Dr. Ashton Sellers has taken over a longstanding animal hospital and made history in the process.
Hickman Mills Animal Hospital was opened in 1957 by Dr. L.W. Williams, per the organization’s website. Now, Sellers becomes its third owner and also leads as the head veterinarian, according to Fox4.
“Once you move into ownership, it’s just a whole different ballgame because now it’s you,” Sellers told the outlet. “From the minute somebody walks in the door, it’s your business, your staff; these are your patients, and that just comes with a different mindset that you have to have.”
This was a long-held dream of Sellers, who aspired for ownership when she was young, her mother, Susan Weaver, told the outlet.
“She’s always excelled; she’s always achieved and always had goals, and she’s always been determined to accomplish her goals,” Weaver said.
Making History
Sellers also makes history in her new role. She is the first Black woman in Kansas City to own an animal hospital and the youngest woman to do so at age 32, reports Fox4.
“You really can do what you set your mind to,” Sellers explained, per the outlet. “If you want to go be an astronaut, go be one.”
Jackson County Legislator Donna Peyton commented:
“This milestone represents far more than personal success it is a powerful testament to perseverance, excellence, and being prepared and equipped for such an opportunity … She has also created a lasting legacy that will inspire generations of young women, particularly young Black girls, to pursue careers in science, medicine, and business ownership.”
Sellers plans to celebrate the hospital’s next chapter. She is hosting an open house on March 28 at 11:30 a.m. Locals can enjoy raffles, giveaways, a silent auction, and a food truck, and can expect a ribbon-cutting ceremony and proclamation from Peyton, per Fox 4.
