TikTok To Be Granted Its Third Extension To Prevent US Ban

TikTok will be granted another 90-day extension to prevent its ban in the U.S.

As AFROTECH™ previously reported, former President Joe Biden signed a law on April 24, 2024, that would require TikTok’s Chinese-based parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform within a year or it would face a nationwide ban. The U.S. has national security concerns about the app and China’s possible access to American citizens’ private data. TikTok is used by an estimated 170 million users, notes NPR.

The Supreme Court had also upheld the law signed by Biden in January 2025.

“There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community,” the court had written in an unsigned opinion, according to another NPR report. “But Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok’s data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary. We conclude that the challenged provisions do not violate petitioners’ First Amendment rights.”

Donald Trump, who assumed office as president on Jan. 20, 2025, has since maintained the stance that he is looking to save the app. He has extended the deadline on the ban twice already by 75 days, in January and then again in April, to give ByteDance more time to close a deal to sell TikTok. However, the company has not shown any interest in a sale despite potential buyers that includes Reddit Founder Alexis Ohanian Sr., YouTuber MrBeast, and Amazon.

Though the original law only permitted one 90-day extension, TikTok has now been granted its third extension, which is expected to be signed by Trump, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News.

“President Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to keep TikTok up and running,” Leavitt said. “As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark. This extension will last 90 days, which the administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.”

The extension will expire in September.
