Business leaders welcome £4m depot move plan by Banks’s owner Carlsberg Britvic

The drinks company, which was formed in 2024 when Carlsberg merged with Britvic, announced on Wednesday that it would be relocating its existing Grimstone Street depot in Wolverhampton to the new WMI national logistics hub at Four Ashes in late 2026.

The move will leave the large Grimstone Street site, next to the former Springfield Brewery, empty but city business officials have hailed the decision to invest in a move to the new WMI as a “significant vote of confidence by Carlsberg Britvic in the people and future of this region”.

Sarah Moorhouse, chief executive of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, welcomed Carlsberg Britvic’s news that it is to become the first occupier at the new £2 billion WMI at Four Ashes, and said construction of a new depot, at Junction 12 of the M6 just outside Wolverhampton, would bring significant benefits to the Black Country.

“This is a significant vote of confidence by Carlsberg Britvic in the people and future of this region,” she said.

“The construction of this new purpose built depot will bring a host of new job opportunities for the people of the Black Country and for our supply chain.

“Our region – and the wider West Midlands as a whole – can only benefit from this type of investment and we look forward to Carlsberg Britvic playing a leading role in driving growth  here for many years to come.”

Councillor Chris Burden, Wolverhampton Council’s cabinet member for city development, jobs and skills, said: “While it is disappointing to be losing Carlsberg Britvic’s presence from this site, the consolation is they are moving their logistics operation just a short distance to the outskirts of Wolverhampton at the West Midlands Interchange – part of the ‘Central Edge’ economic growth zone we have established with our Staffordshire council partners – where our residents will benefit from thousands of employment opportunities.

“We are actively engaging with Carlsberg Britvic on all the sites they own in the city.

“The area surrounding Grimstone Street is set for dramatic change in the coming years with the first phase of our ambitious Brewers Yard residential scheme set to bring hundreds of city living homes to the council’s neighbouring Culwell Street depot site – transforming the city centre and boosting the local economy.”
