Cannabinoids and Temperature: Basic Guide

If you’re starting to get interested in cannabis, you’ve probably heard about vaporizers, edibles, or different ways of consumption. But there’s something many people don’t know: temperature changes everything.
Chemical formula of the main cannabinoids
Why does temperature matter?
Cannabis contains compounds called cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) that produce different effects. But here’s the interesting part: these compounds need heat to activate.
When cannabis is fresh, its cannabinoids are “dormant” (in acidic form). Only when we apply heat do they transform into the active versions we know. This process is called decarboxylation, although you don’t need to remember the name, just understand that without heat, cannabis doesn’t work.
What temperature do I need?
It depends on what you’re looking for. Here’s a simple guide:
Low temperatures (160-170°C): At these temperatures, you’ll get more cerebral and functional effects, with more intense flavor and aroma. It’s ideal for daytime or social activities.
Medium temperatures (175-185°C): This range offers balanced effects with a good combination of flavor and potency. It’s the versatile option for most situations.
High temperatures (185-200°C): Here you’ll experience more body-focused and relaxing effects, with less flavor but more intensity. It’s better for nighttime or rest.
Smoking vs. Vaporizing: what’s the difference?
When you smoke, you burn the cannabis at very high temperatures (over 400°C). This activates the cannabinoids, but also creates smoke with irritating substances.
Smoking is an option, but not the only one
When you vaporize, you heat the cannabis without burning it (between 160-200°C). This releases the cannabinoids in vapor form, without the harmful substances from smoke. It’s cleaner, more efficient, and allows you to better control the effects.

What about edibles?
To make brownies, cookies, or oils with cannabis, you need to activate the cannabinoids first. This is done by heating the cannabis in the oven at about 110-120°C for 30-45 minutes.
If you skip this step, your edibles won’t work. If you use too much heat, you’ll lose potency. The key is finding the sweet spot.
Practical tips to get started
If you use a vaporizer, start at 170°C and adjust according to what you feel. If you’re preparing edibles, use an oven thermometer and be patient. If you smoke, remember it’s the least efficient method, though the most traditional. And above all, experiment: each person is different, find your ideal temperature.
What happens if I use too much heat?
Too much heat can burn the terpenes (responsible for flavor and aroma), degrade THC and convert it to CBN (more sedative, less psychoactive), produce an unpleasant taste, and waste material.
