Nursing Apprenticeship Program Details

According to a press release, the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) has approved its nursing apprenticeship program, which was established to strengthen Alabama’s healthcare workforce and expand care access. The program marks a first for a four-year HBCU in the state of Alabama.

Registered through the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship within the Alabama Department of Labor, the program includes classroom instruction, paid on-the-job learning, clinical experience, and one-on-one mentorship from experienced nurses.

Apprentices Will Be Paid

What’s more, participants can earn wages during clinical rotations.

“This apprenticeship represents a different way of thinking about how we prepare Alabama’s healthcare workforce,” said Meredith Smith, director of the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship, according to the news release. “By blending education with paid and structured on-the-job learning, we are expanding opportunity for students while helping healthcare employers build a strong, sustainable talent pipeline.”

Apprentices can also benefit from scholarship opportunities through the program’s partnership with Baptist Health System, which serves as a “last dollar” scholarship provider, notes the release. This ensures that any remaining tuition or school-related expenses not covered by financial aid can be met.

“Tuskegee University is the first HBCU to enter into a registered nursing apprenticeship program, and Baptist Health is honored to be the first hospital partner in this groundbreaking collaboration. Together, we’re expanding access to hands-on learning, mentorship, and meaningful career opportunities for future nurses,” said in a statement shared on LinkedIn.

“This partnership represents more than a program—it’s a shared commitment to growing the next generation of healthcare professionals and strengthening the future of patient care in our community and beyond,” the statement continued.

The program is also supported by the Alabama Community College System, the Alabama Board of Nursing, and participating employers, per the news release.
