A Georgia woman is taking legal action after what she says was a devastating medical mistake that forever changed her life.
According to a lawsuit, 43-year-old Cassandra Barksdale underwent a complete hysterectomy after doctors told her she had an aggressive form of uterine cancer. Months later, she learned the diagnosis wasn’t hers at all.
The alleged error? Another patient’s biopsy sample had reportedly been mislabeled as Barksdale’s, leading physicians to recommend life-altering surgery for cancer she never had.
Barksdale initially sought treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding and uterine fibroids—noncancerous growths that affect millions of women. After a biopsy in March 2025, she says she was told she had high-grade endometrial cancer and needed immediate surgery.
Believing her life was in danger, she underwent a hysterectomy that removed her uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and nearby lymph nodes. She says she even began preparing her family for the possibility that she wouldn’t survive.
Months later, DNA testing reportedly revealed the cancerous tissue never belonged to her.
Kaiser Permanente has acknowledged that an error occurred, apologized, and said it has implemented additional safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future. The lawsuit seeks damages for the physical, emotional, and reproductive losses Barksdale says she suffered.
A Permanent Procedure With Lifelong Consequences
Unlike many surgeries, a hysterectomy cannot be reversed.
Depending on the type of procedure performed, women may lose their ability to become pregnant, enter immediate menopause if their ovaries are removed, and face increased risks of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, sexual dysfunction, and emotional distress.
For someone who never had cancer, those consequences can be especially heartbreaking.
Black Women Undergo Hysterectomies at Higher Rates
Barksdale’s story is particularly significant because Black women are already more likely than women of other racial and ethnic groups to undergo hysterectomies.
Research has consistently found that:
- Black women are more likely to develop uterine fibroids, often at younger ages and with more severe symptoms.
- They are significantly more likely to undergo hysterectomy as treatment for fibroids than White women, even when less invasive options may be available.
- Studies have shown Black women often receive hysterectomies at younger ages, resulting in decades of potential health effects related to surgical menopause and hormone changes.
Experts say several factors contribute to these disparities, including:
- Delayed diagnosis and treatment of fibroids
- Unequal access to newer uterine-sparing procedures
- Differences in insurance coverage
- Structural inequities in healthcare
- Variations in physician recommendations
While hysterectomies are medically necessary for many women—including those with certain cancers or severe gynecologic conditions—public health experts continue to call for greater access to alternatives whenever appropriate.
How Common Are Laboratory Mix-Ups?
Cases like Barksdale’s are uncommon, but they are not unheard of.
Pathology testing involves numerous steps—from collecting a tissue sample to labeling, transporting, processing, analyzing, and reporting results. Every handoff creates an opportunity for human error.
Studies examining pathology quality have found:
- Complete specimen misidentification occurs in roughly 0.2% to 0.3% of biopsy cases.
- When contamination and specimen mix-ups are combined, some research estimates specimen provenance errors occur in nearly 1% of biopsies.
- The College of American Pathologists has estimated that patient and specimen identification mistakes could contribute to thousands of adverse events nationwide each year, although the exact number of patients harmed is difficult to determine because many errors are caught before treatment begins.
To reduce these risks, many laboratories now use barcode tracking systems, multiple patient-identifier checks, electronic verification systems, and, in especially complex cases, DNA testing to confirm that tissue samples belong to the correct patient.
Why Second Opinions Matter
While no one expects a cancer diagnosis to be wrong, physicians often encourage patients facing major, irreversible surgeries to seek a second opinion whenever time allows.
For cancers diagnosed from biopsies, that can include:
- Having pathology slides reviewed by another pathologist.
- Seeking evaluation at a specialized cancer center.
- Asking whether additional imaging or repeat biopsies are appropriate.
- Discussing all available treatment options before surgery.
These steps cannot eliminate every medical error, but they can sometimes identify discrepancies before permanent treatment occurs.
