African American Wellness Project Celebrates Black History Month, Championing Health Equity and Community Well-being
Oakland, CA — As the nation comes together to honor Black History Month, the African American Wellness Project (AAWP) proudly reaffirms its commitment to addressing healthcare disparities and improving wellness outcomes for African Americans. This year’s Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor”, designated by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), recognizes the profound impact of Black labor and contributions throughout history—spanning skilled and unskilled work, community activism, and economic justice.
For centuries, African Americans have played a critical role in shaping the nation’s labor force, from agricultural fields and factories to professional fields such as healthcare, education, and social justice advocacy. However, economic inequality and systemic barriers have long contributed to disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. AAWP continues to fight for health equity, ensuring that African Americans receive quality, culturally competent healthcare, and empowering individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive.
AAWP: Advancing the Health and Wellness of Black Communities
The African American Wellness Project was founded with a clear mission—to reduce disparities in healthcare for African Americans by providing trusted, culturally relevant health information, education, and advocacy. As a leading voice for health equity, AAWP’s vision is to create a world where African Americans no longer face disproportionate rates of chronic diseases, maternal mortality, and limited access to quality healthcare.
“Black workers, from civil rights leaders to community activists, have fought for dignity and fairness in all aspects of life—including healthcare,” said Dr. Michael LeNoir, founder of AAWP. “We honor their legacy by continuing to challenge racial health disparities and equipping our community with the tools to take charge of their health.”
AAWP’s Initiatives: Empowering Black Communities for a Healthier Future
AAWP works to close the health gap through:
- Health Education & Awareness: Providing African Americans with reliable, culturally relevant health resources on conditions that disproportionately impact the community, including diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and mental health.
- Advocacy & Policy Engagement: Partnering with organizations and policymakers to push for healthcare reforms that prioritize access, equity, and inclusion for African Americans.
- Community Empowerment: Hosting webinars, health screenings, and educational campaigns to ensure that Black communities have the knowledge and resources to lead healthier lives.
Call to Action: Join the Movement for Health Equity
As we reflect on the contributions of African Americans in labor and beyond, AAWP urges individuals, organizations, and policymakers to recognize that health is a fundamental right, not a privilege.
