Astros $119 million All-Star could bolt from Houston to Mariners
The Houston Astros have some questions to answer following their loss in the American League Wild Card Series to the suddenly resurgent Detroit Tigers. Star third baseman and two-time World Series champion Alex Bregman is now a free agent and there are no guarantees he will return to the Astros.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com listed several potential landing spots for the 30-year-old, and among them were the Astros’ AL West rivals, the Seattle Mariners.
“Third base was a problem area for the Mariners in 2024. They ranked near the bottom of the AL at the position in OPS (.643, 11th), home runs (12, 12th) and RBI (49, 13th),” Feinsand wrote. “Given their stellar starting rotation, the Mariners will look to upgrade the lineup this offseason, with third base being an obvious area of need.”
Bregman hit .260 with 26 home runs, 75 RBI and a .768 OPS in 2024. He also won his first Gold Glove this season. He could be a solid addition to a Mariners team that desperately needs offense.
Third base is an area they could stand to upgrade, and having someone like Bregman around could give them a chance to finally take a shot at contending for an AL West title. They finished three games back of the Astros last year.
The Mariners need a big move to shake things up in the AL West and put the rest of the division on notice. It will be interesting to see if they can pull off a signing of Bregman.
