Digital Health Media Platform BlackDoctor Appoints Akinwole ‘Aki’ Garrett As CEO To Improve Health Outcomes For Black Americans – AfroTech

Akinwole “Aki” Garrett has taken over as CEO of BlackDoctor as of April 1, 2026.
In a news release issued Tuesday, April 21, BlackDoctor — a leading loopfocused on improving health and wellness outcomes for millions of Black Americans — said Garrett succeeds founder Reginald Ware, who has transitioned to executive chairman of the board.
“Over the last year, Aki has played a transformative role in shaping the future of BlackDoctor,” Ware said. “Through his strong performance, visible leadership, and forward-looking vision, Aki has earned the title of CEO. He knows our mission, our audience, and what it takes to win. This transition positions the company for its next phase of growth and impact.”
As executive chairman, Ware will focus on board governance and use his network across the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries to drive strategic growth.
“I could not be more excited for Aki to step into the CEO role. In my capacity as Executive Chairman, I look forward to focusing on strategic growth and key relationships to support BlackDoctor’s mission and long-term success,” Ware added.
Who Is Akinwole “Aki” Garrett?
Garrett, who previously served as president and chief operating officer, brings extensive experience leading operations and strategy to the CEO role.
During his tenure, BlackDoctor has undergone a broad transformation, including rebuilding its executive team, improving cost efficiency and productivity, and launching new initiatives, the news release states. His efforts include creating a medical advisory board of eight physicians across multiple specialties and expanding the 2026 calendar of live events.
Garrett also spearheaded the company’s March 2026 rebrand from BlackDoctor.org to a full-scale digital health platform, along with the rollout of AI-powered patient and physician engagement tools.
As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the rebrand includes WellBot, an AI-powered clinical simulation tool featuring chat and voice capabilities and informed by more than 20 years of clinical data, editorial content from the site, and insights from Black medical experts.
The company also launched Health On Point, a consumer-facing wellness tool powered by an AI agent that allows users on BlackDoctor.com to interact with virtual providers representing both male and female clinicians, AFROTECH™ noted.
BlackDoctor’s Next Phase Of Growth
As CEO, Garrett is expected to build on that momentum, with plans to accelerate the company’s growth, expand platform capabilities, and deepen its impact in the communities it serves. The company expects revenue to grow about 30% year over year.
“I am truly humbled and honored to be appointed as the next CEO of BlackDoctor,” Garrett said. “Our mission remains the same — to ensure that every Black family thrives in health — but the way we deliver on that mission will continue to evolve under my leadership. We are building BlackDoctor into a true 360-degree platform, one that brings together technology, innovative tools, industry-leading content, and live experiences to directly meet the needs of patients, healthcare providers, caregivers, and the broader health community.”
