Millions Of New Yorkers Begin Receiving Inflation Refund Checks — Here’s How Much Residents Are Getting Back

New Yorkers are starting to see relief arrive in their mailboxes. As of Friday, Sept. 26, 2025, the state is issuing inflation refund checks worth up to $400 to households across the state, according to CBS News.

As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance confirmed that more than 8 million households qualify for the one-time payment, which helps residents manage rising living costs.

CBS News reports that the state is mailing the checks automatically. Residents do not need to apply or submit additional paperwork. Delivery will continue through October and November, though the timing may vary depending on where you live.

Governor Kathy Hochul underscored the purpose of the program during a press conference, describing it as a way to ease the daily struggles many families face.

“You work hard and, you know, the bills keep piling up, and you just look at them and say ‘when will it ever stop?’… It’s utility bills, your grocery bills, the mortgage or the rent bills… and New York families are just getting so beaten down sometimes.”

Who Qualifies For An Inflation Refund Check?

According to the department’s website, to receive a New York inflation refund check for tax year 2023, you must have:

  • Filed Form IT-201, a New York State resident income tax return
  • Reported income within the state’s qualifying thresholds
  • Not been claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return

How Much Are The Checks Worth?

The size of the refund depends on your filing status and income bracket:

  • $400 for married joint filers and a qualifying surviving spouse with income up to $150,000
  • $300 for married joint filers and a qualifying surviving spouse with income over $150,000, and not more than $300,000
  • $200 for single filers, heads of household, and married filing separately with income up to $75,000
  • $150 for single filers, heads of household, and married filing separately with income over $75,000, and not more than $150,000

Households above those income thresholds are not eligible.
