Rolling Stone Merges With VIBE As Its Seeks To Strengthen Its Hip-Hop And R&B Content

Rolling Stone has merged with VIBE, Billboard reports.
According to Rolling Stone CEO Julian Holguin, the merger will allow the outlet to strengthen its content in Hip-Hop and R&B. Rolling Stone will make investments in VIBE’s “video, podcasts, long-form journalism, social media, and experiential opportunities,” Holguin told the outlet.
As part of the merger, Vibe will also launch a new interview series featuring conversations with notable names in music, sports, and fashion.
“We are thrilled to announce that VIBE is joining forces with Rolling Stone. This historic team-up will enable Rolling Stone to level up the publication’s Hip-Hop and R&B coverage, allowing RS to dive deeper into the culture … VIBE will continue to power cultural conversations and reestablish itself as a driving force for commentary and reporting. Our goal is to continue the mission VIBE was founded on while leveraging Rolling Stone to amplify its presence across all platforms,” Holguin said, according to Billboard.
Datwon Thomas, VIBE’s editor-in-chief, who will now transition to strategic advisor, commented:
“Coming back to VIBE in this role is deeply meaningful to me. The opportunity to help guide VIBE into the next phase of its growth and continued legacy is an honor.”
The two outlets are hiring a new head of the VIBE brand, an events producer, and a video/podcast host.
However, some journalists, including DeMicia Inman and Mya Abraham, have been laid off due to the merger. Both took to X to reflect on their tenures.
“Due to VIBE/Rolling Stone merger my position was eliminated and I was laid off. Thankful for the past 4 years of writing+ reporting,” Inman wrote.
“lf you have leads for roles in media, journalism, or anything editorial please send my way. Thanks in advance for any kind words,” she continued.
Abraham commented:
“I’m still processing today’s news, so bear with me as I get through the calls/texts/emails/DMs. Just know it’s been the joy and honor of my life to document R&B in this capacity.”
