St. Louis American honors 4 Black business leaders during Black History Month

During Black History Month, one of the region’s most respected institutions is shining a spotlight on leaders who are building history right now.
The 24th annual Salute to Excellence in Business, hosted by The St. Louis American, will honor some of St. Louis’ top corporate, entrepreneurial and nonprofit leaders later this month.
Raven Whitener, director of the St. Louis American Foundation, said this year’s honorees reflect the depth of talent shaping the region:
-
Lifetime Achiever in Business – Keith Williamson, president, Centene Charitable Foundation.
-
Entrepreneur of the Year – Eric Rhone, entrepreneur and entertainment executive.
-
Corporate Executive of the Year – Akberet Boykin-Farr, vice president of diversity and social responsibility, Emerson.
-
Nonprofit Executive of the Year – Leslie Gill, president and CEO, Rung for Women.
The annual event recognizes Black professionals in C-suite and senior leadership roles who are making an impact, often behind the scenes. Whitener said the goal is not just celebration, but connection.
“So we have an hour of networking before we start the awards program,” Whitener said. “It really just allows for corporate and community leaders to come together get to know each other meet people that you wouldn’t always get the chance to be in the same room. The changemakers, the decision makers, the people that want to see St. Louis grow and thrive. Those are the people that we look at.”
For Whitener, a St. Louis native, helping organize the event is deeply personal, especially during Black History Month.
“Being able to be a part of a day while these people are getting their flowers while they are here,” she said. “It means a lot to me because I know that means so much to them. It’s living history.”
She said many of the leaders being recognized are making a difference in ways most people never see.
“They are community champions, living right next door to you that you have no idea the impact that they’re making on the region that you live in.”
The Salute to Excellence in Business takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at The Ritz-Carlton in Clayton. 5 On Your Side’s Brent Solomon will serve as emcee.
Tickets and tables are still available online. Proceeds from the event support scholarships through the foundation, helping invest in the next generation of leaders across the St. Louis region.
