Ryan Wilson is speaking at the AFROTECH™ Conference 2026 in Houston, the conference’s 10th year. Wilson is CEO and co-founder of The Gathering Spot, the private membership club and community that started with one location and now operates in multiple cities.
He shared his reflections with AFROTECH™ ahead of the conference.
How Has The Gathering Spot Changed Over The Past Decade?
“We’ve grown from one Gathering Spot location into a much larger community across multiple cities, and in many ways, we’ve surpassed what we originally thought was possible,” Wilson said. “But the most meaningful growth isn’t just about scale — it’s about the impact we’ve been able to make by bringing people together, creating opportunities, and building a community where people can genuinely connect.”
Looking ahead, he’s less interested in adding locations than in what happens inside them.
“The next chapter isn’t simply about getting bigger; it’s about deepening the connections within the community we’ve built. How do we get the right people to each other faster? How do we turn proximity into opportunity, collaboration, and impact?” he said.
The mission itself hasn’t moved much since the first location opened.
“The through line has been our love for our community and our commitment to engaging the issues of the day with the people of the day,” Wilson said.
What Did Scaling Teach Him?
“The hardest version of success for me was scaling,” Wilson said. “Growth is exciting, but nobody really talks about the loneliness that can come with it.”
As the company grew, he said, some people questioned whether he deserved the success, while others expected him to stay exactly who he was before it.
“What getting through that taught me is that success can expand your opportunities while shrinking the number of people you can truly be vulnerable with,” he said. “You have to be intentional about protecting the relationships and spaces where you don’t have to perform, lead, or have the answer.”
Wilson named his father as one of the people who made The Gathering Spot possible. The company also printed the names of its early supporters in a book documenting its history.
“He believed in us early, and that support was invaluable,” Wilson said. “Sometimes having someone believe in you before there’s much evidence that they should can make all the difference.”
What Does AFROTECH™’s First Decade Say About What’s Possible?
Wilson put AFROTECH™ and The Gathering Spot in the same category: businesses built for the Black community that were once written off as too narrow.
“For a long time, there was an assumption that building specifically with our community in mind somehow made an idea niche or limited its potential. The last decade has proven the opposite,” he said. “AFROTECH™ is part of that story, and I think The Gathering Spot is too.”
He added, “Ten years later, the question isn’t whether we can build these things. We’ve proven that. The question now is how big we’re willing to imagine they can become.”
What Will Wilson Tell The AFROTECH™ Audience?
This isn’t Wilson’s first time at AFROTECH™, but it will be the first time he shares the stage with TK Petersen, The Gathering Spot’s CFO and co-founder. Petersen told AFROTECH™ he used to attend only to support Wilson’s panels, “and now I get to join him on stage to discuss our journey together.”
Wilson’s message for attendees is about following through on an idea, even when it’s hard.
“The idea inside of you exists for a reason. You have to believe that and be a good steward of your assignment,” Wilson said. “Not everyone will understand it. The timing may not always make sense.”
“Betting on yourself is really about honoring that responsibility,” he continued. “Do the work. Stay committed. Find the people who can help you carry it forward. And don’t abandon the assignment just because the path becomes difficult.”
