The University Of Chicago Announces Guaranteed Free Tuition Initiative For Undergraduate Students From Families Making Less Than $250K – AfroTech

The University of Chicago (UChicago) has announced a new initiative to remove financial barriers for its students.
UChicago wants to expand its tradition of supporting students on their way to becoming leaders, thinkers, and innovators by providing paid internships, ongoing mentorship, and peer networking opportunities, according to a press release. The school draws first-generation students and those from middle-income families and rural communities, as well as those interested in public service.
In the press release, UChicago says undergraduate students from families earning less than $250,000 annually will be eligible for a guaranteed free tuition program starting in the Autumn Quarter 2027. Students from families making less than $125,000 will also receive free housing and meals with other fees covered.
The release further notes that the initiative will make it easier for families to predict how much financial support they will receive and simplify the process of exploring different options.
“The University of Chicago is proud to sponsor a learning environment characterized by intellectual curiosity, ambition, and rigor, to shape the next generation of great thinkers whose ideas will benefit the American people and the broader world,” said Paul Alivisatos, the university’s 14th president, according to a press release. “By deepening our commitment to affordability, we are helping to ensure that the brightest minds can join us.”
James G. Nondorf, UChicago’s vice president for enrollment and student advancement and dean of college admissions and financial aid, commented:
“At a time when many families are uncertain about what the cost of college means for them, we created this initiative to radically expand and simplify our support for students. This initiative will increase predictability and allow students and their families to focus on what’s important: their love of learning, and preparation for meaningful and rewarding lives after graduation.”
UChicago’s initiative adds to the more than $225 million in financial aid provided to undergraduate students annually. On average, the school notes that undergraduate students receive financial aid packages of more than $75,000, per the release.
