African American Wellness Project Discusses Environmental and
Social Injustices at National Medical Association Convention
New York City, NY –The African American Wellness Project (AAWP) led a packed session of the Floyd Malveaux Symposium on August 5th at National Medical Association (NMA) Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in New York City. Founder of AAWP, Dr. Michael LeNoir, President of the AAWP and Past Chair of the NMA’s Allergy section moderated the panel entitled, “Environmental and Social Injustices, and AI: The Impact on African Americans.” LeNoir shared the stage with the Rev. Al Sharpton, President and Founder of National Action Network.
It’s important for us to talk about how artificial intelligence impacts healthcare for people of color,” said Dr. LeNoir. “These issues hit home for our community, so we need to understand the challenges Black folks face and find solutions together.”
Rev. Sharpton spoke on AI’s implications for Black healthcare, warning, “If we aren’t careful with AI in healthcare, disparities will worsen.” He raised the question, “How do we implement an equal AI system in an unequal society?” Sharpton has agreed to partner with NMA to advance a joint health disparities agenda.
The NMA’s Annual Convention is the nation’s leading forum on medical science and African American health, with the theme “The Quest for Healthcare Transformation.” The program included special sessions, workshops, and symposiums through August 7, 2024, at the New York Hilton Midtown and Sheraton New York Times Square.
