Fashion Brand Telfar Announces That It’s ‘Severely Downsizing’ In What Its Consumers Are Calling A ‘Brilliant’ Marketing Move – AfroTech

Telfar is downsizing, and customers are calling its announcement a “brilliant” marketing move.

Telfar Clemens is the founder of Telfar, a New York-based unisex fashion brand launched in 2005, which has gained the attention of celebrities such as Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, as AFROTECH™ previously reported.

Fast Company reported that in 2019, the brand made $1.9 million in revenue, and by 2023, it was earning $7 million from a single product release. Fast forward to July 16, 2026, Clemens announced the next product launching under the brand would be a downsize.

“Facing the pressures of tariffs, shrink-flation and industry-wide declining interest in black-owned businesses — Telfar is saddened to announce that on July 17th 2026, we will be severely downsizing,” he wrote on Instagram. “The cut-backs represent a 90% overall reduction in scale from our smallest previous offering — resulting in a profound loss in total capacity.”

At face value, Clemens’ messaging raises concerns, as the company joins a growing list of Black-owned businesses like Ami Colé and Adwoa Beauty that have had to make difficult decisions to remain afloat, with some being forced to close.

“Raise your hand if you were scared,” Javy Rodriguez, a freelance social editor, commented on the post.

Vice President of Fashion at Meta, Eva Chen, commented:

“This gave me extreme anxiety, need to go meditate.”

Clemens’ post continued by revealing that Telfar will be launching a bag charm.

“While our overall holdings will be reduced to items such as lip gloss, loose change, and dime bags — we are happy to announce we have only one physical closure — and it has a zipper. Getting smaller means getting leaner, smarter and more resourceful — which is why we are also happy to announce an expansion of our back-end team featuring two card-pockets for easy access to short term liquidity, and a karabiner hand strap allowing partnerships with larger portfolios,” Clemens wrote.

The bag will release on July 17 at 11 a.m. ET on Telfar.net or will be available at the flagship location on 408 Broadway, NY, NY.

“whew! we still up,” Olamide Ayomikun Olowe, founder of Topicals and owner of Bread Beauty Supply through her holding company CODB Holdings, commented on the post.
