Helping Your Kids Maintain a Healthy Weight Starts with You

Childhood obesity is a growing concern worldwide. In the U.S. alone, obesity rates among kids aged 2 to 19 soared to 19.7% between 2011 and 2020—a troubling statistic. The rates are even higher for Black children in the U.S., highlighting the urgent need for action. But the impact doesn’t stop at childhood. Many kids who struggle with obesity carry it into adulthood, facing increased risks for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even certain cancers.

The causes of childhood obesity are complex—social, environmental, and genetic factors all play a role. But one thing is clear: many families find it hard to stick to healthy diets and maintain regular physical activity. And here’s the truth: kids don’t drive themselves to fast-food chains like McDonald’s or Burger King. Adults are the decision-makers.

As a pediatrician, I can tell you that children’s eating habits start early. Parents play a crucial role in shaping those habits. It’s not just about changing your child’s diet—it’s about creating a healthier lifestyle for the whole family. You already know what goes into a balanced diet, so take that first step. Start small, but start now. Because, as hard as it is to hear, once unhealthy habits set in, they’re incredibly tough to break. Let’s give our kids the best chance at a healthy, happy future.
